Milestone #4 - Communion
Age: Immediately following salvation

Communion is a time to Remember and Reflect.

Remember
It's a time to remember when Jesus changed everything. The cross was the climax of all human history and when we come to the elements of the bread and wine (or juice), we remember the body that was broken and the blood that was shed to cover our sin.

In teaching this to your children to remember go to 1 Corinthians 11:23-26. It reads: 23 For I received from the Lord what I also passed on to you: The Lord Jesus, on the night he was betrayed, took bread, 24 and when he had given thanks, he broke it and said, “This is my body, which is for you; do this in remembrance of me.” 25 In the same way, after supper he took the cup, saying, “This cup is the new covenant in my blood; do this, whenever you drink it, in remembrance of me.” 26 For whenever you eat this bread and drink this cup, you proclaim the Lord’s death until he comes.

Reflect
After covering the remember aspect of Communion, then move to the reflect aspect by reading vs. 27-29:
27 Therefore, whoever eats the bread or drinks the cup of the Lord in an unworthy manner will be guilty of sinning against the body and blood of the Lord. 28 A man ought to examine himself before he eats of the bread and drinks of the cup. 29 For anyone who eats and drinks without recognizing the body of the Lord eats and drinks judgment on himself.
1 Corinthians 11:27-29

Before one receives communion, the Bible says he must examine himself. To examine oneself is to allow God to bring to mind anything in one's life that has not been surrendered to God. You can focus on this time of reflection by reading Psalms 139:23-24 which says, "23 Search me, O God, and know my heart; test me and know my anxious thoughts. 24 See if there is any offensive way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting."

Following this time of reflection, participate in the Lord's Supper as a family.

At LifePoint, we celebrate communion together on the first Sunday of every month. If a person has not received the gift of salvation in Jesus, then we would ask that they hold off receiving communion until they have made that decision.
